Andrew heads to Newbury and Kempton’s evening AW card for his three recommended bets/trades on Friday, September 20th.
NEWBURY 1.25
The William Haggas-trained MAELSTROM, owned by Cheveley Park Stud, was weak in the betting when making his debut in a 6f novice contest at Haydock earlier this month and the son of Night Of Thunder looked pretty clueless on his way to an eight-length last of five – blowing the start and weakening from over a furlong out. That outing was clearly needed and the yard’s previous runners from this sire were all beaten on their debuts, including Irish Champion Stakes winner Economics, but three scored at the second time of asking. He needs to have improve considerably in just 15 days but that’s certainly possible and, at the available price, he’s worth chancing. Buy in the Sporting Index 50-30-20-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back MAELSTROM in Newbury 1.25
KEMPTON 6.45
HAPPY HADEDA needed her debut effort at Glorious Goodwood last summer, though shaped with promise in a 66-1 seventh of 13. Hughie Morrison’s filly then caught the eye at Newbury a few weeks later with a solid 18-1 second of 16. They raced in a heap down the centre of the track that day, though it still helped to be drawn middle-to-high, with the first seven finishers coming from stalls 9, 3, 12, 8, 16, 15 and 13. It also paid to race up with the pace, which made Happy Hadeda’s effort all the more meritorious as she was ridden patiently from stall 3. She duly got off the mark here at Kempton in September before getting bogged down on heavy ground at Newmarket in early November where beating only a couple home in Listed company. The daughter of Invincible Spirit has been off the track for 322 days, but it looks significant that she returns to Kempton for her seasonal/handicap debut and she’s worth a small interest at a big price. Buy in the Sporting Index 50-25-10 market or take a fixed odds price.
Recommendation: Back HAPPY HADEDA in Kempton 6.45
KEMPTON 7.45
George Scott has a cracking recent record with his geldings in all-weather handicaps, scoring with 33 of the 131 (25.2%) qualifiers since the beginning of 2022 for a profit of £20.21 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 22.56, A/E = 1.46). BAROQUE BOY bombed out at Bath in June when making his turf debut, finishing sixth of eight when the 13-8 favourite, but has since bounced back on Polytrack with a 1m Lingfield third and a smooth 1m2f Chelmsford win from Sir Mark Prescott-trained favourite Orbital, who only went down by a head on her next start. That victory took his record in handicap company on synthetics to 22131 (2-5) and there could be more to come now upped in trip to 1m3f. Back him each-way in the fixed odds betting or buy in the Sporting Index 50-25-10 market.
Recommendation: Back BAROQUE BOY in Kempton 7.45
Please note that the picks recommended in this blog post are based on past performance and should not be considered a guarantee for future winning outcomes, and it is important to remember that spread betting carries a high level of risk to your capital and can result in losses larger than your initial stake/deposit.
