When it comes to the Olympics, for some reason Team GB has a history of excelling at sports that involve, err, sitting down.

A shame then that bridge and chess (the only ‘mind sports’ officially recognised by the IOC), didn’t make the cut for 2012. 

From the comfort of our own armchair, here’s a guide to Team GB’s rear guard.  Because backside is clearly our best side.

Sporting Index predict 13 Team GB Golds and 32 medals from 64 events in canoeing, cycling, equestrian, rowing and sailing.

Canoeing Stats

4 - The consecutive number of Games at which Team GB has won canoeing medals.  The 15-strong Team GB is targeting 3-4 medals in 2012.

12 - The number of canoeing events at London 2012 across two disciplines - slalom and sprint.

Cycling Stats

36 - The age of flag-carrier Sir Chris Hoy who is attempting to repeat his multiple-Gold winning heroics from Beijing - although Sporting Index say he’ll only bag one.

2 - The number of events that Tour de France hero Bradley Wiggins is competing in - the men’s road race (setting it up again for Cav?) and individual time trial.  

12 - Sporting Index’s prediction of the total medals to be won by Team GB in cycling - more than in any other sport.  And 5 will be Gold.

Equestrian Stats

56 - The age of dressage rider Richard Davison who is also the oldest member of the whole 542-strong Team GB.  7 of the 13 in the equestrian team are over 40.

Royal Zara Phillips (Eventing) is following in the Olympic hoof prints of her mother Princess Anne (competed at 1976 Games) and father Captain Mark Phillips (who won gold in the 1972 team event).

3 - Consecutive number of games (’00, ’04 and ’08) the GB men’s four boat has won Gold.

10 - The absence in years from rowing ’92 gold medalist Greg Searle has to overcome if he’s to win a men’s eight medal at 40).

Sailing Stats

16 - The size of Team GB competing in all 10 events - Britain has led the sailing medal count for the past three Olympics.

5 - The number of consecutive Games Ben Ainslie is out to win a medal at and if it is gold he’ll surpass Denmark’s Paul Elvstrom as the most decorated Olympic sailor.
